Mountain Leader Award Training Courses
This is a six-day programme for mountaineers with a minimum of one year’s experience in the hills and mountains. The course provides teaching in the technical skills required for leading parties in the mountainous environment of the United Kingdom. Minimum experience is 20 quality UK Mountain days and to possess a genuine interest in leading groups in mountainous terrain.
A reasonable standard of hill fitness is required to complete the training.
Sample programme commencing at 9.00am on the first day:
Mountain day - navigation;
Mountain day - Leadership and group management;
Mountain day - Risk assessments, hazards, Mountain rescue and accident procedure, Equipment; Ropework day - Emergency use of rope, Choice of belays, Confidence roping, ascent & decent, lowers, River crossing.
A two day* mountain expedition with overnight camp and night navigation.
Discussion topics include: Weather interpretation, Leader & legal responsibilities, Expedition planning, Access and conservation.
This programme can change slightly subject to weather conditions.
* A three day expedition group option is available and adviseable.
