Navigation Skills
All of our Navigation Courses are run in association with Ordnance Survey.
We offer three levels of navigation skills, dependant on your previous experience. Details of the individual course content are given below, but if you're in any doubt what level you should be aiming at please contact us for further advice.
Introductory
This course is for those who have little or no map reading or navigation experience. During this course you will be introduced to:-
- map symbols and scale
- map references
- practical map interpretation on moorland terrain
- use of the compass for orientation and travel
- safety in the hills
Intermediate
This course is the next step on from the Introductory course and is designed to help you improve and practice your existing skills and learn new ones. This course will:-
- build on skills learnt during the Introductory course
- emphasise the use of aids for travel
- teach route choice and selection across challenging ground
A night navigation walk and use of the GPS may also be included dependant on group requirements and ability.

Higher Level - Mountain in Summer or Winter
This course is aimed at those who are experienced in map reading and navigation, and may have wish to gain a professional qualification in the outdoors to lead others. The course will:-
- enhance existing navigation skills
- improve confidence in the mountain environment
- teach skills to navigate over difficult and challeenging terrain
- cover techniques for navigating in poor weather conditions
